Our home is surrounded by a beautiful garden, and it is visited by a wonderful array of birds. We love to watch them come and go; they bring us so much joy. The weather has been so mild for the time of year, but the forecast suggests that it’s about to turn decidedly chilly and we have therefore turned our attentions to the protection of our feathered friends.
Birds often seek protected places to roost or sleep in colder weather. Dense vegetation found in thickets, or the interior branches of evergreens serve as a windbreak and conceal the birds from night-prowling predators. We have been doing our research and have discovered that during the winter, a few species of songbirds like to use roost boxes to stay warm, these include bluebirds, chickadees, titmice, screech owls and some woodpeckers.
So, if our birds would like roost boxes, they will have roost boxes but not just any roost boxes, our birds will have hand painted, five-star roost boxes.
We have had the best time painting the boxes, we love to craft and get creative, and it is wonderful to be able to create something that will be so useful.
We haven’t quite finished our masterpieces yet but once they are completed, we shall insulate them and have them installed in the garden, high up, out of the way of predators.
We are excited to watch to see what birds decide to call them home through the coming winter and we hope to get some photographs to share with you all.
